The heat is finally starting to subside and it’s nearly time for me to start a book that has nothing to do with faeries. Almost.
High of the week: my pre-loved clothing finds this past weekend
Low of the week: only just Monday and my ass has been kicked
Thoughts & Things:
the fact that Sabrina Carpenter’s newest music video is basically a love letter to “Death Becomes Her,” which i hope leads to more people watching this gem of a movie
the snack that i will devour in one sitting: Like Air pancake and cinnamon flavor. the pancake one, you can practically taste the butter and syrup. it’s ridiculous.
the perm is getting a touch up this week
first the dairy industry came for oat and nut milks. now the rice federation has come for RightRice
here’s a $1,780 purse that i definitely don’t need (or can afford)
my tickets to Atlanta have been officially purchased
happy Virgo season to all the astrology girlies
Button Mash: Last weekend, my partner and I went to Button Mash for some nostalgic gaming. Our mission was to compete in pixelated combat and determine a joystick champion.
First things first, we went to the bar. I changed my usual wine order (yes, even at dives) and tried a strawberry rhubarb cider instead. It was on the sweeter side but delicious. My partner chose a craft beer, which, as a non-beer fan, to me, tasted like...beer. We warmed up with Tapper and then moved on to the main event: Mortal Kombat. I always choose Sindel but couldn't do her hair-tossing move (lame). The battle was intense, but I won. It's rare for me to beat him at video games, so the victory was delicious. His expression, priceless.
After our epic showdown, we played some shooting game, the carnival pinball, and Frogger. However, I have to admit that Barcade in Highland Park is still my favorite. I really like dominating at their Addams Family pinball.
Pop Star Academy: As a former dancer, with a child dancer still living within me, "Pop Star Academy: Katseye" on Netflix is allowing me to live through my childhood dreams. But, you know, without all the heartbreak that my younger self would absolutely not have survived. The rejection, the online trolls... yeah, no thanks. Just thinking about it makes me want to crawl into a hole and cry. But the dancing, the friendship, and the heart—it gets me. Plus, I definitely envy their singing abilities, since I wanted to be a singer until I was eight. That's when I shattered my own dreams by recording myself singing and playing it back. To this day, I still have PTSD from that recording. You should have seen me attempting karaoke at a wrap party a few months ago; I just got cringe goosebumps thinking about it. Anyway, if you're into K-pop, girl groups, dancing, female friendship, and singing, give it a watch. I'm just here to tell you about all the reality TV and docuseries. We can't always be highbrow, you snobs.
Books books books: As it turns out, I'm still super absorbed in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. Since last week, I have now made my way to book three. In fact, I'm nearly done with book three... So, these books have really slowed my progress on Beach Reads by Emily Henry. On top of that, I've got a stack of books I haven't touched yet that are screaming at me to stop buying books and start reading them. This stack of books includes several from my last Book of the Month, which consisted of:
Sign Here by Claudia Lux
The Wedding People by Alison Espach
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali (author of one of my favorite books, The Stationary Shop)
The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley (technically this came in my July box)
But, if I’m honest, I’m also on the lookout for the next fairy series to fill the void I will undeniably feel when I’m done reading this series.
Things I enjoyed reading this week:
why are the costumes in movies so distracting lately? by
. as someone who loves movies, wardrobe choices in films (and shows) can really take me out of story. i recently tried to explain this to someone who looked at me like i was nuts. if the story is good why should the costume matter? it just does OKAY? so i really enjoyed reading Emily North’s newsletter this week. How 'Smut' Took Over Our Summer Reading Lists by Clementine Jackson. okay, so romantasy is in the air.
Lovehoney has reported that searches for 'smut books' have increased by a whopping 78% in the past year alone, while unprecedented sales in the 'romantasy' genre have been credited with sending various publishers' profits soaring.
Fear as a Game by Elissa Gabbert. as someone who loves the horror genre, i really enjoyed reading about fear as a form of entertainment
Vintage store & Dresscue haul: Even though I was dead set on not spending any money on clothing this past weekend, I caved as soon as I went shopping with two of my trendiest friends. Seriously, random folks started asking them for fashion advice in the dressing rooms.
Normally, I don't really score at thrift stores or places with pre-loved clothes, but this time I left with 5 new pieces.
vintage Bongo jeans
cropped 70s (?) top
a very 90s floral dress
a wool skirt that’s a little schoolmarm-ish, but I’m not mad about it
green t-shirt that says “Cowgirl” over the breast pocket
(pictures to come)
Alright folks, wish me luck this week because it’s going to be a very busy one. Have a great week and make me jealous by telling me what your Labor Day weekend plans are.
